What is needed for further development of Biosaline Agriculture?

Systemisation and well defined trials for technical developments

One of the problems in the current biosaline practice is that there are many data but very often anekdotical and not very well systemised. There is a need for a categorisation of biosaline systems and their potential impact.

Closing of the ‘innovation gap’
The commercial implementation of biosaline agriculture is far behind its scientific results. Like all innovations, biosaline agriculture is confronted with the challenging step from laboratory to market. To not only explore but realize these opportunities for the future, the gap between biosaline research and biosaline commercialization has to be overcome.

Market parties need:
- economical data. These can be provided by agronomical pilot projects and semi-commercial demonstrations.
- information about the chemical composition, fibre length and pulping qualities (Paper & Pulp industry), heating values, ash content, volatile matter, moisture content (Renewable energy).
- lab tests and logistic pilot programs to develop solutions for the various steps along the Value Chains of the potential products.

Framework and integrated models
To assess the potential impact of biosaline systems on saline wastelands, frameworks (definitions, criteria etc) and integrated models are needed to provide tools for decision making on different levels. Important in these models is the validation of exernalities: positive and negative effects that normally are not considered to be of economic value.
