OASE participates in halophyte conference in Napels, Italy

March 18, 2010 -

From March 13th to March 14th 2010 OASE participated in the first meeting of COST Action – Putting Halophytes to Work – From Genes to Ecosystems, in Naples, Italy.

During two days scientists shared knowledge and experience in the field of halophytes. Through oral presentations and posters diverse subjects as ecology, molecular biology, computer modelling of water, soil and salt balances, plant development, etc were brought to the attention of the public.

OASE was invited to the conference to share experiences with bringing halophytes to the market. OASE Director Jeannette Hoek gave an animated presentation discussing successes and failures and possibilities and obstacles in commercialising salt tolerant plants. Several cases were highlighted, including the BIOSAFOR project, halophytes used for landscaping, her own private company, importing Salicornia Bigelovii to the European markets and others. Special attention was given to the various stages in the chain of product development from wild plant to final commercial product and the links in each stage between agricultural research and market development.
