Location
The BIOSAFOR research project is focussing on saline wastelands in arid and semi arid areas. Although salinization is a problem at global scale, the case studies of the research activities are focussing on South Asia, namely Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. These countries are not just among the most affected countries regarding salinity. The research agricultural research institutes of these countries have furthermore a distinctive knowledge and long research history in the field of saline agriculture and forestry.

Pot trials are conducted in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Spain and the United Arab Emirates. The case study areas are in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Here some examples of case study areas:

Sodic soils: Lucknow (India) and Saraswati forest (India) case study areas
Saline - sodic soils: Pakka Anna (Pakistan) and Lahore (Pakistan) case study areas
Waterlogged saline areas: Sampla (India) and IGNP (India) case study areas
Saline soils and saline groundwater: Hisar (India), Bhudawara (India) and Kharya-Sodha (India) case study areas
Non-delta coastal areas in (semi-) arid regions: Gwadar (Pakistan) case study area
River delta areas in humid regions: Kuakata (Bangladesh) and Khajura (Bangladesh) case study areas
