See here results from the work package (link)
The objective of this work package is to acquire specific information on saline sites, where the trees do prevail naturally (or have been established for research and afforestation purposes) and the performance of these trees in various – saline - environments. These data should enable conclusions on best practices.
Long term field experiments and monitoring are necessary to assess the long term performance of biomass production systems (forestry) in saline environments. Because the running time of this project is too short to perform field experiments with salt tolerant trees for biomass production and in order to explore existing experiences in the area of biomass production in saline environments, this project will refer to monitoring trees growing in the wild or in existing biomass (forestry)-plantations.
Deliverables D4: Database with collection of data on existing tree species in various saline environments and of various ages including information on yields and biomass characteristics with regard to its use as solid fuel, wood and for pulp and paper production D5: Characterization of saline sites/environments (starting from FAO-categories) D6: Identification of biomass production systems for saline areas & dry areas with brackish water (see salinity categories USDA)
