The main activities carried out were: • A first scientific Kick-off workshop to organize and coordinate the different research activities (6 to 8 March in Volendam, the Netherlands) • The set-up of a detailed work plan • The development of protocols for experiments and measurements in the pot trials and case study areas (WPs 1 and WP 2) • The development of databases and formats to summarize regional soil and water data that will be used for regional saline biomass potential estimates (WP 3) • The preparation and start-up of pot trials to analyze the influence of salinity on tree growth (WP 1) • The selection of case-study areas, the set-up of data collection on soil, water and tree growth in these areas (WP 2) • The collection of data on saline environments in the case-study region to prepare a regional biomass potential analysis (WP 3) • The preparation of the development of a global saline biomass potential assessment model (WP 4) • Visits from researchers of OASE, ICBA, Acacia Institute and UHOH to the South-Asian research institutes to discuss and facilitate the progress of the research activities in WPs 1-3 and to collect data and discuss the methodologies.
