Results and achievements of the first project year
In WP 1 a list of 43 tree species, accessions and ecotypes has been selected for experiments in pot trials that determine the salinity tolerance of these trees. In the Asian partner institutes infrastructure (e.g. irrigation systems, pots) has been set up for these trials and the first batch of trials has been started in the Emirates, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and first measurements have been taken.
Results from the first year in WP 2 are definitions and categorizations of saline wastelands and the selection of case-study areas according to these categories. First data have been collected from the selected case-study areas. In both WP 1 and WP 2 another important result was the agreement on methodology and data recording and the development of protocols and data templates.
Results and achievements of WP 3 were the development of a soil and water database building the frame for data interpretation. Further primary and secondary data were collected by Acacia Institute and Hohenheim University in cooperation with the South-Asian partner and more detailed data were collected from case-study areas in Haryana state and used for the further development of the database.
In WP 4 a good understanding of saline agro-forestry systems and requirements for modelling these systems has been achieved. A number of data from case-study areas, reports and literature with regard to crop growth in saline environments have been collected.
In WP 5, the data collection on management practices in saline agro-forestry systems has been started up and the first economical data for a 1000-ha plantation have been collected.
